The Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd
We are part of the Synod of the Diocese of Edmonton that is located in the northwest of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The Church started out in a tent in Calder in 1910 with a Church building coming a few months later. The parish then moved to a new Church building on 134 Ave and 127 St. in 1960. Services were held there until the building was sold in 1985. We amalgamated with St. Marks Mission that was located just to the north of Good Shepherd and we met in Bishop Savaryn School until we bought the old St. Charles Roman Catholic Church building in 1991. Our boundaries for parishioners are north of the Yellowhead Trail to the city boundary and 97 St. west to the city boundary. Currently (November 2011) we have approximately 103 families and a few members in nursing homes with more newcomers joining our worship every month.
Church Services
Our Sunday service is at 10:30AM with Holy Eucharist weekly. We use the Book of Alternative Services (BAS) and usually the book of Common Praise for the Hymns. The Church Bulletin is given to you as you enter the Narthex which will include the hymns, the pages of the service, the readings and prayers that will be used.
The Shepherd Singers usually sing more contemporary hymns for 20 minutes before the service starts.
The Peace Greeting is a ritual practiced in the early Church. It is a liturgical act - part of the worship. It indicates that the service if the Word has concluded, that we have heard and reflected on the Scriptures, prayed for ourselves, our neighbor and the world, have confessed our sins and received assurance of forgiveness. We are ready to move toward one another to share the reality of Christ's peace.
Please know that it is traditional Anglican practice to welcome all baptized Christians to the Lord's Table. If you wish to receive a blessing, please indicate this by keeping your hands at your sides or crossed in front of you.
A Holy Eucharist service is held every Friday at 9:00AM.
A church service for shut ins can be arranged by contacting Rev. Canon Maureen Crerar
Sunday School
We offer a Sunday School for children for ages 3 to 12 years with different parishioners taking turns offering assistance with the lessons and crafts. After the opening hymn the children go upstairs for their class returning to partake in the Peace Greeting and Eucharist.
Fellowship
After the Sunday morning service there is a fellowship period with coffee being served. On the third Sunday of each month after the service we have a Sandwich luncheon lasting about an hour. At this time we share sandwiches, veggies, cookies, etc. that is brought by parishioners for all to enjoy. (If you forget to bring anything don't worry there is usually more than enough!) At this time we also celebrate the birthdays of members of the congregation with a special birthday song and cake.
